Portraying a Picture of Rising Pakistan: Conversation with Senator Sarmad Ali

Sarmad Ali, the Managing Director and President of Jang Media Group and Geo News, has recently been elected Senator from the province of Sindh. He obtained his master's degree from Villanova University, Pennsylvania, USA, and entered the advertising industry upon his return to Pakistan in the late 1980s. Since then, he has been an integral part of the Jang Media Group, contributing to its growth and success over the past three decades.

Additionally, Sarmad Ali serves as the Secretary General of the All-Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS), following his previous role as the President of the organization. In recognition of his significant contributions to the newspaper industry, he was honored with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan's third-highest Civil Award, by the President of Pakistan in 2013.

Mr. Sarmad Ali, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Let's start by discussing Pakistan's vision for growth. How do you see the country progressing in the coming years?

Sarmad Ali (SA): Thank you for having me. Pakistan's vision for growth is focused on sustainable development, economic prosperity, and social progress. We are committed to strengthening our infrastructure, improving governance, and enhancing the quality of life for all our citizens.

President Asif Ali Zardari's vision has been instrumental in driving progress and development in Pakistan. His focus on democratic governance, economic reform, and social welfare has helped to stabilize the country and set it on a path towards sustainable growth. His efforts to strengthen ties with China have also been critical in promoting economic cooperation and regional stability.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's vision of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has been a game-changer for the region. How do you see the success of CPEC for the benefit of both Pakistan and China?

SA: CPEC has led to the development of several key infrastructure projects in Pakistan, including roads, ports, and energy facilities. These projects have not only created thousands of jobs for the local population but have also helped to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.

President Zardari is deeply committed to the success of CPEC and recognizes its potential to transform Pakistan's economy. He has been actively involved in promoting CPEC projects and ensuring that they are implemented in a timely and efficient manner. His government has also taken steps to address security concerns and create a conducive environment for Chinese investment.

In what ways do you think the media can contribute to the success of CPEC and the broader China-Pakistan relationship?

SA: The media can contribute to the success of CPEC and the broader China-Pakistan relationship by providing accurate and timely information about the projects and initiatives being undertaken under CPEC. By highlighting the benefits of CPEC for both countries and showcasing the positive impact it is having on the lives of ordinary people, the media can help to build public support and confidence in the project. Additionally, the media can play a role in promoting people-to-people exchanges and cultural understanding between Pakistan and China, which are essential for strengthening bilateral ties.

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasizes the importance of connectivity in five domains - peace, prosperity, openness, innovation, and people-to-people bonds. Furthering on the fifth element, I believe there should be media connectivity as well.

The media corridor in CPEC is an interesting aspect. How do you think it can help in projecting the right image of both countries internationally?

SA: The media corridor in CPEC has the potential to play a crucial role in projecting the right image of both Pakistan and China internationally. By facilitating the exchange of news, information, and cultural content between the two countries, the media corridor can help to promote a more accurate and positive perception of Pakistan and China in the global arena. It can also serve as a platform for highlighting the benefits of CPEC and showcasing the progress and development taking place in both countries.

As CPEC continues to unfold and more development projects come online, the media will need to adapt and expand its coverage to keep pace with these developments and ensure that the public remains informed and engaged.

As a Senator, how do you plan to contribute to the development of the advertising and media industry in Pakistan?

SA: As a Senator, my role offers a unique opportunity to champion policies that foster the growth and advancement of Pakistan's advertising and media sector. My focus is on establishing a regulatory framework that not only facilitates the industry's expansion but also upholds principles of transparency and accountability. Additionally, I aim to introduce initiatives that elevate the professionalism and standards within the sector, ensuring that they align with international best practices. By doing so, I aspire to create a thriving and responsible media landscape that serves the interests of our nation.

Thank you, Mr. Sarmad Ali, for sharing your insights with us. We look forward to seeing the continued progress and development in Pakistan under your leadership.

SA: Thank you for having me. I am confident that with the continued support of our partners, we will be able to achieve our vision for a prosperous and progressive Pakistan.
