Interview with Suhai Aziz Talpur, Pakistan's First Female Police Officer Awarded by China
On 23 November 2018, Balochistan Liberation Army militants armed with guns and a suicide vest tried to storm the Chinese consulate in Karachi but a fearless lady cop set an example of bravery by leading the security operation. Clifton’s then Assistant Superintendent Police (ASP) Sohai Aziz Talpur was the first to respond to the attack along with her team which successfully foiled the terrorist attack with the help of security forces.
To honor her bravery, China Consul General Karachi Yang Yundong presented "Great Wall Commemorative Medal" to Pakistan Police Officer on July 22, 2024. Chinese Consulate General in Karachi and Sindh Police jointly held the presentation ceremony of the Great Wall Commemorative Medal. On behalf of Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China, Consul General Yang Yundong presented the gold Great Wall Commemorative Medal and certificate to Suhai Aziz.
Chinese Consul General Yang and Home Minister Zia ul Hassan spoke highly of the noble professional ethics and selfless dedication of Suhai Aziz, stressed that her feat fully reflects Pakistan police's firm determination and confidence in protecting Chinese people in Pakistan, safeguarding China-Pakistan friendship and promoting cooperation between the two countries. At that occasion, Suhai Aziz said that she highly cherished this honor and will contribute strength of her whole life to the iron-clad friendship between China and Pakistan.
Miss Suhai joined the Civil Services of Pakistan in 2013. She has honored her family name by becoming the first female Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from Lower Sindh. She belongs to a lower middle-class family of Bhai Khan Talpur village in Tando Muhammad Khan district in Sindh. Her desire to be a part of a positive social change wasn’t appreciated by her relatives, but she had her father’s support and courage of her own. She kept moving forward and, eventually, set an example for many young girls by joining the profession once believed that only men can join. This strong woman is also a proud mother, she is as much dedicated to her family as to her service for country. Suhai’s life is perfect example that explains that woman can do anything, that they are equal to men when it comes to responsibilities, obligations and sacrifices.
Suhai is now serving as the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Central Police Office, Karachi. In an exclusive interview with Huashang News, Sohai Aziz Talpur, shared remarkable insights into her journey from her early days in the police force to the tense moments of the operation. Talpur, vividly recounted the ordeal she faced that fateful day, balancing the weight of duty with the intensity of saving lives. Her story is not just a testament to courage under fire but a reflection of resilience, passion, and the unwavering commitment to her uniform. As the first Pakistani to receive this honor from the Chinese Consulate, Suhai Aziz said that this award is a tremendous honor, both personally and professionally. It is a recognition not just of my efforts, but of the dedication of the entire police force in Pakistan. Personally, it validates the hard work and sacrifices made throughout my career. Professionally, it reinforces the importance of our role in ensuring the safety and security of not just our own citizens but also of international friends and partners like China.
Suhai Aziz noted that this honor not only recognizes her personal achievements, but also highlights the deepening trust and cooperation between Pakistan and China. She said that this award reflects the close ties between the two countries in security cooperation. Suhai further pointed out that as China and Pakistan continue to cooperate on major initiatives such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, such recognition will further emphasize the commitment of both sides to jointly safeguard the security and prosperity of the two countries. She believes that this honor will inspire both sides to continue to consolidate and expand security cooperation and promote the development of bilateral relations to a higher level.
As the first recipient of the award, Suhai Aziz conveyed an important message to Pakistani officers and youth. She said: “I would like to tell my fellow officers and the youth of Pakistan that the relationship between Pakistan and China is of paramount importance. We all have a role to play in strengthening these ties, whether through our work in security, diplomacy, or everyday interactions. By committing ourselves to professionalism, integrity, and dedication, we can further solidify the bond between our nations and contribute to a future of mutual respect and cooperation."
Suhai Aziz talked about her experience of becoming a female police officer, especially the challenges faced in traditionally male-dominated fields. She said that her journey to become a police officer stemmed from the desire to serve her country and contribute to justice and security. Growing up in a society where many roles are traditionally dominated by men, she faced various challenges, including suspicion, prejudice and the pressure to constantly prove her ability. However, with her determination, the support of her family and her persistence in her goals, she overcame these obstacles and paved the way not only for herself, but also for other women who aspire to join the law enforcement team.
When asked who or what inspired you to join the police force, and who do you consider your role models in law enforcement? Suhai said that her inspiration came from a deep-seated desire to challenge the status quo and serve the community. She said that she was particularly motivated by the stories of strong women who broke barriers in their respective fields. In law enforcement, she look up to figures like Benazir Bhutto, who, despite numerous challenges, remained committed to her vision for Pakistan. She also draw inspiration from her colleagues who demonstrate courage and resilience daily like Ms. Maria Mehmood, Ms. Ammara Athar and Ms. Arsala Saleem.
Regarding the events in November 2018, and the immediate thoughts and actions upon hearing about the attack on the Chinese Consulate, Suhai Aziz recalled that when she learned that the Chinese Consulate was attacked, her first reaction was to care about the safety of the people in the consulate. She said: "When I learned about the attack that day, my immediate focus was to ensure the safety of those in the consulate. My first priority was to eliminate the threat as quickly and effectively as possible. We quickly mobilized to assess the situation and coordinate all forces to ensure the security of the consulate."
Suhai Aziz talked about the changes in her life and career after the attack, saying that this incident became a key moment in her life and career. She pointed out that the attack brought international recognition to the efforts of the Sindh Police and highlighted the importance of Pakistan and China in security cooperation. She was deeply humbled by the recognition of her by Pakistan and China, and said that it inspired her to continue working with greater dedication, while also inspiring others to serve the motherland with the same determination. Suhai thanked China for the Great Wall Gold Medal, believing that this honor was a great affirmation of her and her team's efforts.
Speaking about the security measures for Chinese citizens in Pakistan, especially in Sindh, Suhai Aziz said that protecting the safety of Chinese citizens in Pakistan is the top priority, and important measures have been taken to this end. However, security is an ever-changing challenge, so strategies must be continuously evaluated and adjusted. She pointed out that strengthening intelligence sharing, increasing community engagement, and deploying advanced technology are key to further strengthening the security framework. In addition, regular training and exercises for law enforcement agencies are also key links to be fully prepared for any potential situation.
In addition, Suhai Aziz pointed out that one of the main challenges currently faced by Pakistan's law enforcement agencies is the constant evolution of threats, especially in counter-terrorism. She stressed that the tactics of terrorist organizations are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and law enforcement agencies must constantly adjust their strategies to stay ahead. On the other hand, limited resources and insufficient training are also major challenges. Suhai also mentioned that addressing the root causes of extremism through community engagement and social development is essential to achieving long-term security success.
Suhai Aziz said that with the implementation of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects, China-Pakistan relations will become stronger. She pointed out that security plays a vital role in the success of these projects, as a safe environment is essential for the smooth implementation of the projects. By ensuring the safety of Chinese citizens and protecting investments in Pakistan, it not only contributes to the stability and prosperity of the region, but also further consolidates the ties between the two countries. Suhai Aziz provided valuable advice to young women who aspire to join the police force, especially those from conservative backgrounds. She said: "My message to these young women is to believe in yourself and your abilities. The path may be challenging, especially if you come from a conservative background, but with determination, hard work and tenacity, you can achieve your goals. Do not let society's expectations constrain you; instead, use them as motivation to prove that you can excel in any field you choose. Surround yourself with supportive mentors and peers, and always stay true to your values and vision. Your courage and commitment will pave the way for future generations."
